Chemical sector - Infrastructure optimization and compliance project
Many of our projects address critical and strategic issues for our customers who, therefore, choose to not disclose their name”.
Environment
A Belgium-based chemical and pharmaceutical group operates in 3 activity sectors: chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. The group faces strong regulations established by the European Commission, and more precisely REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), one that requires all companies to register manufactured or imported chemical substances into a central database owned by the European Chemical Agency in Helsinki, Finland. In order to comply with REACH regulation, the client needed to review its IT infrastructure in order to combine information from its purchasing, sales, production, R&D and regulatory departments.
Solution
Thanks to its large involvement in the IT developments of REACH, Trasys has been assigned to undertake an IT strategy mission with the purpose of adapting the IT infrastructure and aligning several business processes with REACH guidelines and requirements. After deep analysis of the processes and underlying applications, Trasys provided a set of recommendations and implemented a prototype for substance volume tracking by linking the SAP Supply Chain and SAP EH&S systems of the client. The final solution consists of a lean data collection process for registration, coupled with specific functionality to track and monitor all volume changes of relevant substances online.
Benefits
The system now allows the client to easily sign-up online, submit dossiers and other required information on chemical substances to the Agency. By doing so, not only does the client fully complies with the new regulation, he also enjoys a full exploitation of its SAP ERP systems by realising important cost savings as no more redundant activities must be performed to collect the data used for compliancy with the REACH regulation.
