Engineering sector - IT outsourcing project

Environment

Tractebel Engineering, a major European engineering consultancy, wanted to outsource a large part of its IT infrastructure, made of 140 servers and 1.600 desktops, with the purpose of to getting a better-performing working environment aligned with the latest software standards. The aim of Tractebel Engineering was to have one seamless IT support organisation and working methods throughout all their departments. The project covered a complete review of operational processes and TCO optimization as well.

Solution

Trasys first optimized the whole IT infrastructure by standardizing the desktop environment, rationalizing the LAN-WAN network infrastructure and consolidating the 140 servers in order to better control the huge data volumes and ensure higher availability for critical applications via server clustering. In parallel, the set-up of a centralized helpdesk allowed to support users for hardware and software issues, manage users request in real time and prioritize them accordingly.
Efficiency of the environment has been enabled by automated back-up and cleaning operations, improved email infrastructure and regular security scans and tuning.
A fixed price per seat has been proposed to the customer for standard services, while a strict service level agreement (SLA) was systematically reviewed every 6 months to ensure a permanent fit with customer’s evolving infrastructure and business needs.

Benefits

Trasys succeeded in reducing the infrastructure’ TCO by 8% within the first year, well in line with customer expectations. After 4 years, the TCO has been reduced by 30% while the cost per seat was reduced by 15%. Clearly, such results have been made possible thanks to increased manageability of the IT infrastructure, stricter management of user requests and asset lifecycle management. The final added value for Tractebel Engineering also consisted of a significant improvement of quality of service towards the end-users.
